In the end of May Canterbury in New Zeeland experienced extreme rainfall followed by floods. We have started on a severe event page here: 202105 - Rainfall - New Zeeland , but we would appreciate more information about the event.

  1. GloFAS flood forecasts began to show the possibility of flooding in the Canterbury region from ~24-25 May, although with small probabilities and focussed on the more northern rivers in this region. Probabilities of moderate to severe flooding increased from 28th May including rivers further to the south closer to Christchurch, with an estimated peak river flow on 1st June.

The screenshot from GloFAS (www.globalfloods.eu) map viewer shows the forecast on the map from 30th May, and the plots show the probability of exceeding the 2 (yellow), 5 (red) an 20 (purple) year return periods in each of the daily forecasts from 24th May to 30th May at the river point just north of Christchurch, showing increasing probabilities with each consequent forecast.
