ERA5 data is no longer available through the ECMWF Web-API service. Access to ERA5 data is now from the Climate Data Store (CDS) only (interactively through the CDS web interface or programmatically using the CDS API service).

How is the ERA5 data organised in MARS, the ECMWF Meteorological Archiving and Retrieval System?

In general it is organised, as a huge tree, with the indentation below, showing different levels down that tree

  • class: ERA5 (ea). This is the same for all ERA5 data
    • stream: Deterministic forecasts: Atmospheric model (oper)
    • stream: Deterministic forecasts: Wave model (wave)
    • stream: Ensemble data assimilation:  Atmospheric model (enda)
    • stream: Ensemble data assimilation: Ensemble data assimilation monthly means of daily means (edmo)
    • stream: Ensemble data assimilation: Ensemble wave data assimilation monthly means of daily means (ewmo)
    • stream: Ensemble data assimilation: Synoptic monthly means for ensembles (edmm)
    • stream: Ensemble data assimilation: Synoptic monthly means for ensembles of ocean waves (ewmm)
    • stream: Ensemble data assimilation: Wave model (ewda)
    • stream: Monthly means: Monthly means of Daily means (moda)
    • stream: Monthly means: Monthly means of daily means for ocean waves (wamd)
    • stream: Monthly means: Synoptic monthly means (mnth)
    • stream: Monthly means: Synoptic monthly means for ocean waves (wamo)

The subsequent branching depends on which of these streams you use. Please see for more details:
