Scores for polar regions
Two new verification areas have been proposed: north pole (60-90 degrees north) and south pole (60-90 degrees south).
Global NWP centres will carry out a preliminary study of the possibility of computing scores for these polar regions during 2011.
All centres are invited to contribute to this investigation. Please contact the Lead Centre for more information.
ECMWF has produced some initial results based on data it currently has available. These scores are for slightly smaller areas (pole-wards of 65 degrees) but are provided for information. Some comparisons between different centres are included. Results are for 500hPa height only and verification is against analysis.
