Spatial reference systems
The IFS assumes that the underlying shape of the Earth is a perfect sphere, but the with the surface elevation specified relative to that sphere. The geodetic latitude/longitude of the surface elevation datasets are used as if they were the spherical latitude/longitude of the IFS.
