Individual values of these parameters for the different ensemble members give varying intensities of MJO on the diagram and the spread becomes large. Note also that by construction, the amplitude of the forecast ensemble mean MJO on this diagram (as shown by black triangles) will tend to reduce, on average, at longer lead-times.
Fig8.2.6-7: Hovmoeller diagram and Wheeler-Hendon MJO diagram based on forecast DT 00UTC 22 April 2026. Both diagrams show steady advance of an MJO from the Indian Ocean into and across the Atlantic Ocean. It is forecast to weaken away when it re-enters the Indian Ocean - amber and then green dots on the Wheeler-Hendon diagram. Satellite picture shows the MJO over the Atlantic.
