titleWill ECMWF AIFS parameters also be changing with the cycle change?

No. AIFS has a separate update cycle from the IFS, so no changes in AIFS parameters is expected with this update.

titleAre you planning to add more ensemble members to the re-forecasts system?

No, at the moment we don't have the resources to increase the number of ensemble members in the re-forecasts.

titleIn line with the expected changes for 2025, could we replace the historical ENS control data with HRES, allowing us to begin retraining models that are prepared?

We would encourage this, yes. In the IFS Cycle 49r1, (ex) HRES and CTRL will be numerically identical. If the users make this change at IFS Cycle 49r1, then they won't need to make it at IFS Cycle 50r1.

titleAre users able to acquire all CTRL (ex HRES) and ENS data in GRIB2 format?

In IFS Cycle 49r1 it will still be a blend of GRIB1 and GRIB2. Full migration to all GRIB2 will happen with IFS Cycle 50r2, planned for implementation in early 2026, with plenty of test data available during the year or so leading up to this. Read more in this article from Spring 2023 Newsletter and In Focus article:  Migration to GRIB2 data format: implications for users.

titleIs there any developmental plans for new cycles of IFS in terms of new data formats like zarr instead of GRIB2? Should we expect any approach regarding these changes near future?

We are not planning to replace GRIB2 in the near future.

titleI am a user that hasn't upgraded to CCSDS compression. Will I be forced to migrate with the IFS Cycle 49r1?

No, we will not be forcing users to migrate to the CCSDS compression with the IFS Cycle 49r1 update. However, we strongly recommend testing and switching to the CCSDS compression.
