About

Joaquín Muñoz-Sabater was born in Valencia, Spain. He received obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III), Toulouse, France,in April 2007. In 2008, he joined the in April 2007, in France, with "mention très honorable". In 2016 he joined the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) entrusted to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), Reading, U.K., where he is currently working in the Data Assimilation Section. His research focuses mainly on the assimilation of passive remote sensing data (with special emphasis on Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) data), for soil moisture analysis and the impact on the weather forecast.UK) on behalf of the European Commission (EC). There, Joaquín is, since April 2020, working as Senior Scientific Officer / ECV manager, leading the ECV programme, as well as the management and coordination of C3S contracts aimed at producing Climate Data Records of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) based on satellite data.

Prior  Prior to his Ph.D., Joaquín worked first firstly at the European Space Agency (ESA), ESTEC, The Netherlands, where he was involved in feasibility studies for the EARTHcare mission, and second secondly at the Delft University of Technology, where he carried out research in radar interferometry. His thesis took place entirely at Météo France, and it was focused on the issued by the Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III), Toulouse, France. His main topic was the assimilation of remote sensing data for the characterization of land surfaces. Before joining the ECMWF, he Following his PhD he also worked at the European Centre for Research and Advanced Training in Scientific Computation (CERFACS), Toulouse. There, he was responsible for a project of the French National Hydrometeorological and Flood Forecasting Centre, where he studied studying the impact of assimilating streamflow observations for flood forecasting applications.

applications. In 2008 he joined ECMWF, where he firstly worked in the Data Assimilation Section, mainly focusing on the assimilation of passive remote sensing data (with special emphasis on Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) data), for soil moisture analysis and the impact on the weather forecast. He also was involved in the implementation of a Neural Network aiming at producing a short latency soil moisture product based on SMOS data. Finally, in 2016, he moved to the Copernicus Department, where prior to his current role, he worked as reanalysis scientist taking responsibility on two main activities: 1/ land surface reanalyses, 2/ technical officer of C3S terrestrial ECV contracts.
