This page illustrates the procedure , step-by-step presented in How to acknowledge, cite and reference data published on the Climate Data Store to acknowledge, cite and reference the ERA5-Land hourly data from 1950 to present dataset and provide appropriate attribution. This dataset is generated under the framework of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). For such dataset, the Licence to use Copernicus products only applies.

Use Case: A user has downloaded ERA5-Land hourly data from 1950 to present data from the Climate Data Store to calculate some results that will be presented in an article. The user did not download the data to redistribute it. The user downloaded data for the period 1977-1997 from the Climate Data Store on 23 February 2020October 2021.

Step 3 - Provide clear and visible attribution to the Copernicus programme and attribute each data product used (to accredit the creators of the data) Reference the dataset used
  • Check the licence(s) → Licence to use Copernicus Products only
  • Acknowledge as indicated in Clause 5 e.g. in the context of this use case, Clause 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 apply and the data was used in 2020. In this case, a typical acknowledgement may be as follows:

The results contain modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information 2020. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains.

  • Add the citation in the Bibliography as shown on the Citation pop-out window e.g. if you downloaded the data on 23rd February 2020. Note that because the time span of the downloaded data is in this example 1977-1997, both citations are needed:
Muñoz Sabater, J., (2019

In this case, use the citation provided in the CDS Catalogue entry under "References > Citation and attribution":
