The LEXIS project will develop a large-scale HPC & Cloud BigData analytics industrial pilot test-bed to demonstrate high Technical-Readiness-Level software infrastructure dedicated to 3 use cases, which each have very high industry or social-economic impact: (1) Aeronautics (2) Weather & Climate (3) Catastrophe Alert systems. The focus will primarily be on how HPC and BigData/Cloud systems interact; how they can share data; and methods to compose workflows of tasks running on both cloud and HPC systems.

ECMWF will participate by:

 (a) contributing with requirements for the software infrastructure

 (b) providing the global weather forecasts to feed local regional models

 (c) designing and developing a data sharing API that will connect the multiple layers of the weather & climate test-bed

 (d) exploring existing technologies for handling large-scale analysis of in-situ unstructured weather observations (e.g. mobile phones, smart cities, etc)

 (e) exploring existing technologies for serving high resolution weather forecast products for end-user data analysis and post-processing in Cloud systems

ECMWF strategy alignment:

ECMWF will explore how we can use BigData/Cloud technologies for serving our data to our member states in BigData/Cloud systems and how these can interact with our HPC system.
