Job description

The Free University of Amsterdam is looking for an earth- or atmospheric scientist who studies contemporary climate change from an atmospheric perspective and studies the changing occurrence of climate extremes like floods, droughts or heatwaves and their impact on terrestrial processes such as carbon assimilation or wildfires via Earth system models (ideally EC-Earth), data assimilation techniques, or big data analyses. The ideal candidate combines theoretical expertise with various atmospheric measurements datasets (for example from new satellite missions for monitoring atmospheric dynamics, atmospheric composition, and land surface properties) and assesses impacts and risks for society and/or ecosystems. The candidate is expected to connect on-going research lines between the department of Water and Climate Risk (part of the Institute for Environmental Studies, IVM) and the department of Earth Sciences.

Job duties

  • conduct research on the impact of the changing atmospheric composition and dynamics on land surface processes and extremes.
  • teach courses in atmospheric processes and dynamics and (big)data use on BSc. and MSc. level
  • supervision of Masters and Bachelors theses
  • work together with the department's staff of both Earth Sciences and Water and Climate Risk in the acquisition of external funds
  • (co-) publish scientific papers

CONSULTANCY Call for Special Service Agreement in support for the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch, G3W, at the World Meteorological Organisation in Geneva.

  • The World Meteorological Congress at its 19th session (Cg-19, 22nd May - 2nd June 2023) approved the concept note and established a new global greenhouse gas monitoring initiative that aims to support WMO Members in mitigation actions undertaken to implement the Paris Agreement. This concept has been developed in a close collaboration between WMO and partner organizations dealing with greenhouse gases and carbon cycle.
  • The Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W) fills critical information gaps and provides an integrated, operational framework that brings together all observing systems, as well as modelling and data assimilation capabilities in relation to greenhouse gas monitoring, striving to reduce the uncertainty in assessing the efficacy of climate action.
  • The purpose of this consultancy is to support and oversee the G3W Implementation and Pre-operational Phase G3W-IPP in 2024-2027, detailed in the G3W Implementation Plan https://community.wmo.int/en/meetings/global-greenhouse-gas-watch-g3w-implementation-plan
  • This initial call is for 30-day within 2024 at 750$ net of tax per day for experts in stakeholders’ engagement of Greenhouse Gas Monitoring for Climate Action Support.
  • The G3W is estimated to cost 1 Billion $ over the G3W Implementation and Pre-operational Phase G3W-IPP in 2024-2027, therefore experience in managing Climate related sizeable budgets, procurement, strategic development, and liaison with public and private partners will be an advantage. Previous managerial experience and proof of leadership skills are essential.
  • The successful candidate will support the Co-Development of the strategic actions and contribute to the implementation plan delivery. Oversee and evaluate the G3W implementation plan progress at regular quarterly intervals and draft recommendations. Liaise with established and potential founders and stakeholders in National and International actors.

Job duties

Within the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W) Team and in collaboration with the Infrastructure (I) Department and the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW), and reporting to WMO Secretariat, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

- Provide advice on the G3W governance formation and activities and review the progress on governance actions (GOV1 and GOV2) formulated in the G3W Implementation Plan, reporting to both the WMO Secretariat and the G3W Coordination bodies.

- Provide advice on the G3W partnerships with other relevant institutions and activities outside of WMO and ensure stewardship on the ways to expand or enhance partnerships with those institutions or bodies.
