This page illustrates the procedure, step-by-step presented in How to acknowledge, cite and reference data published on the Climate Data Store to acknowledge, cite and reference the ERA5-Land hourly data from 1981 to present. This dataset is generated under the framework of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). For such dataset, the Licence to use Copernicus products only applies.

Use Case: A user has downloaded  ERA5-Land hourly data from 1981 to present data from the Climate Data Store to calculate some results that will be presented in an article. The user did not download the data to redistribute it. The user downloaded data from the Climate Data Store on 23 February 2020.


Step 1 - Acknowledge according to dataset licenceStep 2 - Cite each dataset version used in bibliography
Step 3 - Reference the dataset used
  • Check the licence(s) → Licence to use Copernicus Products only
  • Acknowledge as indicated in Clause 5 e.g. in the context of this use case, Clause 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 apply and the data was used in 2020. In this case, a typical acknowledgement may be as follows:

The results contain modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information 2020. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains.

Cite each dataset used → CDS Catalogue entry Citation -

  • Add the citation in the Bibliography as shown on the Citation pop-out window e.g. if you downloaded the data on 23rd February 2020.:
