With version 2.42, the parameter definitions were extended in preparation for the migration to GRIB2. Three sets of parameter definitions now coexist. This includes:
- A set of parameter definitions as they were widely in 2.41, to ensure backwards compatibility.
- A set of parameter definitions to facilitate the improvements made as part of the migration.
- A set of parameter definitions which is specifically added for CAMS - facilitating the split of chemical parameters into a paramId and chemId.
The different sets of parameter definitions are used depending on the WMO tablesVersion, the marsClass and the generatingProcessIdentifier, which specifies the IFS cycle used to produce the data.

3. Changes in the post-mtg2 CAMS parameter definitions
These definitions are used in ecCodes if tablesVersion > 33 and marsClass is set to a5, mc or cr with some exceptions to ensure continuity (e.g. for IFS cycle 50r1 with marsClass mc).
