The OpenIFS team at ECMWF are pleased to announce the release of the OpenIFS/AC model.

OpenIFS/AC is an extended version of the ECMWF OpenIFS model, with the released first version based on OpenIFS 43r3v2, that allows the additional simulation of interactive atmospheric chemistry and aerosol processes in the troposphere and stratosphere. This extended model therefore opens opportunities for new scientific applications.

The model chemistry is similar to that used by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the implementation into OpenIFS has been led by KNMI. We are extremely grateful for the excellent work carried out by the colleagues at KNMI and other ECMWF Member State scientists.

Further Information

More details about the OpenIFS/AC model and its capabilities can be found on the ECMWF web pages here: https://confluence.ecmwf.int/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=261065979

A model description paper has recently been published:

Access and Support

OpenIFS/AC is provided as an add-on to the standard OpenIFS model. It can be obtained upon request as additional software to the standard model under the same licence agreement as OpenIFS itself.

If you are interested in using OpenIFS/AC and would like to find out more about the model and what support can be offered, please email in the first instance openifs-support@ecmwf.int with a brief outline of your proposed use of the model.
