OpenIFS user workshop article in ECMWF summer 2014 newsletter

The 2014 OpenIFS user workshop was held in Sweden at the University of Stockholm. The meeting was a chance for the small but growing OpenIFS user community to get together with ECMWF scientists, learn about the model and exchange information.

An article on this workshop has now been published in the summer 2014 edition of the ECMWF newsletter available here

ECMWF science webinars & training courses

I'd like to draw your attention to our new series of science 'webinars' given by ECMWF staff and this years ECMWF training courses. Webinars last approx 1hr on specific topics and are free to watch using a web browser. Forthcoming talks include:

27th Jan : Understanding the model climate (L. Magnusson)
                Monthly forecasting (L. Ferranti)

28th Jan : Forecasting extreme events (I. Tsonevsky)
               Extra-tropical cyclone tracking (T. Hewson)
Model errors and diagnostic tools (M. Rodwell)

30th Jan : Clouds and precipitation: (R. Forbes)

Registration is required, for more details please see:

ECMWF training courses take place at ECMWF between March and May on topics such as data assimilation, advanced methods for Earth-System modelling, parametrization of physical processes and predictability. The courses are free and places are limited. Registration deadline is Friday 24th January.

Moisture transport to Antarctica using OpenIFS

Dr Victoria Sinclair, from the University of Helsinki, presented a paper entitled 'Moisture transport to Antarctica by extra-tropical cyclones' at the recent 13th European Meteorological Society annual meeting, September, in Reading, UK. Her study is one of the first to use the ECMWF OpenIFS model. The abstract and presentation are available from the EMS conference website.

Second call for OpenIFS user meeting at University of Helsinki

An OpenIFS user meeting is being organised by the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The draft programme is now available. Please see the call announcement for more details.

OpenIFS presentation at EGU 2013

An oral presentation on the OpenIFS project and model was given at EGU 2013. For details of the session and link to the abstract see: http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2013/orals/12394

First call for OpenIFS user meeting at University of Helsinki

An OpenIFS user meeting is being organised by the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Please see the first call announcement for more details.

Documentation for CY38R1 now available

OpenIFS is based on CY38R1 of IFS - the current operational cycle.

Full documentation for this cycle is now available from the ECMWF eLibrary for Cycle 38r1.

Note that as OpenIFS does not include any observation processing or data assimilation, not all of the chapters are relevant.

New 'HowTo' on adding or changing the OpenIFS code

A new HowTo on adding or changing the OpenIFS code can be found here:

How to change or add new code

It describes how to use the FCM make command to only copy the files you alter rather than the entire source directory and gives some examples as starting points.
