Following the termination of the test Atos system (TEMS) in Reading in November 2021 and a lot of work by many teams across ECMWF, we are pleased to announce the availability of the first Atos cluster, named 'aa', in Bologna, for ECMWF staff.

We invite everyone at ECMWF to start testing your personal computational activities currently running on your local desktop, on the servers (lxc, lxop, ecgate) and on the Cray HPCs (cca and ccb) on the first Atos system (aa). To help you with this work, we have updated the Atos HPCF Documentation. We strongly encourage you to read through those pages before you start your work on this new platform.

The prepIFS environment for running IFS experiments on Atos is still under development, and is not yet ready for general use. There are still some final pieces of the hardware and software configuration to be set up, and the IFS section is busy porting and testing IFS cycles, and tuning configurations for the Atos supercomputer. A further announcement will be forthcoming where users will be invited to start running prepIFS experiments on Atos, and migrating their workflow from their workstations & the Cray supercomputer.

Note that the Atos HPCF is not yet considered operational, we therefore ask you not to start running your regular production or operational work on 'aa'. We will announce any disruption to the Atos service - services in Bologna - through the Service Status.

In the coming weeks we plan to organise BOND migration surgery sessions, including on the Atos usage, prepIFS and other services, focusing on individual section teams' work. More information on this will follow soon.

Thank you for reporting any issues or sharing your feedback via the ECMWF Support Portal mentioning 'Atos' in the title.
