This is a description of EFAS v1.0, For an overview of other EFAS releases, please see: EFAS versioning system

Summary

The EFAS release of version 1.0.0 marks the start of the new and extended EFAS model domain alongside a number of scientific and technical updates of the system including a calibration. EFAS has been running operationally since October 2012, but with the release of version 1.0.0 we mark the start of the official EFAS versioning.

The first major change was that the model domain expanded eastwards and southwards, now covering all of mainland Europe. The projection was at the same time changed to INSPIRE-compliant ETRS89 Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area Coordinate Reference System (ETRS-LAEA). There was an increase in the number of hydrological and meteorological observational data used for calibration and post-processing of the hydrological system. The hydrological model upgrade included changing from two to three soil layers, introducing open water evaporation, water abstraction and changes to how water is stored and released in the land surface. The LISFLOOD code was rewritten using python and a PCRaster python extension. All static maps used in EFAS was expanded and updated. The whole system was recalibrated, and all of the products used for the web were adjusted and recalculated for the new system.
