ENS Products  - Their Use

The ensemble produces a great deal of forecast data; much of it is displayed as diagrams or charts. The human eye can't easily identify more than the larger differences between each individual ensemble member.  To make differences clearer,  several display methods have been designed.  These are used to help assess the similarity and spread of results, and to some extent the run-to-run consistency.

Output in chart and diagrams form gives:

  • easy visual interpretation of the information.
  • a simple visual assessment of the probabilities of forecast weather events.
  • highlights potential extreme weather events.

Outputs from the various IFS programs are described in the rest of this section (medium range, extended range, seasonal).  Access to the charts (ecCharts, Open Access, Dashboard) is described in Section 10.
