GloFAS relies on hydro-meteorological observations, numerical weather predictions and satellite images in order to produce, enrich and validate its products, resulting in improved accuracy and reliability.

In-situ monitoring of

hydrological variables is crucial

discharge data is crucial for GloFAS model

input,

calibration, validation and post-processing.

We greatly acknowledge the contributions of all data providers and their effort to GloFAS, the Copernicus EMS and the Copernicus program. To know more about collaboration and data exchange, please log an issue request through the GloFAS Contact Us

Discharge data can be used to improve GloFAS provided that they meet the following requirements:

  1. Number of data: 365 daily data. The time series does not have to be continuous, that is the 365 daily data can be distributed over multiple years.
  2. Licence: document (preferred option) or a statement to classify the licence (secondary option). The statement must classify the data usage as open (raw data is open, freely usable and can be redistributed), limited (raw data is open, but they can be used only for non-commercial purposes), restricted (no redistribution of raw data allowed, the data can only be used in GloFAS).
  3. Station metadata:
  • River basin
  • River name
  • Station name (optional)
  • Coordinates: latitude and longitude (preferred in WGS84)
  • Height above mean sea level (optional)
  • Drainage area (km2, optional)
  • Discharge units
  • Timezone of discharge measurements (optional)

The minimum drainage area for which GloFAS simulations provide reliable results depends on the spatial resolution of the latest operational version: please refer to this page GloFAS versioning system - Copernicus Emergency Management Service - CEMS - ECMWF Confluence Wiki for all the details about the latest and the upcoming GloFAS releases.

To share your discharge data with GloFAS and to request further information, please send a message through the GloFAS Contact Us form.
