Welcome to the home of the Extreme Weather stream of the EU-US alliance on AI for the Public Good (AI4Good), started in 2023 as part of the EU-US Trade and Technology Council (TTC).
Background
European Commission is working together with the representatives from the US under the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) transatlantic forum, to enhance trade and investment, strengthen technological and industrial leadership, boost innovation, promote emerging technologies and infrastructure, and encourage compatible standards and regulations based on shared democratic values.
In this context, the European Commission and the US administration signed an “administrative agreement on Artificial Intelligence for the Public Good” in January 2023, committed to tapping into the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to collaboratively and complementarily drive research to address global challenges.
One of these challenges to be addressed is related to the anticipation and preparation for disasters exacerbated by the climate crisis and as forecasting of extreme weather and climate events plays a crucial role in it. The AI for Public Good aims to facilitate more precise local risk assessments and prediction of their impacts, benefiting particularly vulnerable regions. One area we are exploring now is the improvement of Tropical Cyclones forecasts through Destination Earth initiative (DestinE).
