Land use and land cover data in CAMS

Overview

Modelling and emission activities in CAMS apply a wide range of land use and land cover (LULC) data sets. A summary can be found in this document:

Planned IFS (NWP/Carbon Cycle) developments
- Move from to GLCC1.2 to ESA-CCI data
- Improved disaggregation into high and low vegetation LAI
- NRT LAI data assimilation developments are planned as COCO2 effort
- Potential to include fire / burnt area surface class in collaboration with CAMS
Strong interest by global and regional AQ groups in availability of NRT LAI data
Urban tile will be important input for IFS-CAMS (e.g. dry deposition)
Online modelling of biogenic VOC emissions modelling requires more detailed PFT breakdown (e.g. for isoprene) and also PTF -specific LAI information in IFS
GFAS development and operational configuration uses different LULC data sets
Steps for improved harmonisation of global LULC data in IFS / CAMS
- Be aware of the specific needs for different processes / projects
- Agree to upgrade together to ESA-CCI or Copernicus-Land data sets
- Introduce sub-classification where needed
- Share cross-walking tables
