Sea Surface Temperature

Name:Sea_surface_temperatureAbbreviation:wtmpUnit:K
DefinitionThe water and/or sea-ice temperature close to the ocean's surface
ValidityDaily averaged
Comment

Computed from instantaneous values at 00, 06, 12 and 18 Z - Land points should be set as missing values.

The exact depth of the ocean layer used to define the seas surface temperature may vary across models and observations. It is usually between 1mm and 20m.

In some models (egrr, ammc) the sea surface temperature represent both the water and sea-ice temperature whilst in others (e.g. ecmf) it is not the case (it represents purely the water temperature with global lower limits of 271K).
