OpenIFS is an ECMWF led project which aims to develop and deliver provides an easy-to-use, exportable version of the IFS system in use at ECMWF. OpenIFS provides the forecast-only capability of IFS (no data assimilation), stays close to operational version and supports all the operational resolutions. Some other components of the full IFS are also omitted (such as the non-hydrostatic code). For more details see a more detailed comparison of how OpenIFS compares with IFS.
The model is intended for research and educational use by Universities, research organisations and individual researchers on their own computer systems.
OpenIFS is supported by a dedicated team at ECMWF. Documentation, install instructions, frequently asked questions and other help information can all be found on this website. User forums are also available.
