The models provided under the OpenIFS licence are not open source (despite the name).

A licence per institute is to be completed before any software is provided. The licence is not intended to be a barrier to the use of the OpenIFS models and the OpenIFS support team can help with any licensing queries.

To request a licence:

The key points of the OpenIFS licence are:

  • Licensed per institute and requires an authoritative signature from the host institution. It is not available with a personal license.
  • Free for educational and research use to research and academic institutions.
  • Commercial and benchmarking use of OpenIFS models is not permitted.
  • A perpetual license, it does not need to be renewed once signed. The license can be terminated at any time by the licensee.
  • Dissemination of real-time forecast products using OpenIFS models is forbidden (e.g. web based forecasts).
  • Redistribution of OpenIFS supplied software to any non-licensed institute outside the licensed institute is forbidden

We do not currently have any available licenses for OpenIFS.

As OpenIFS is under development we are restricting access to ensure good support for early users and allow the OpenIFS team time to develop the model & infrastructure.  To register your interest, contact openifs-support@ecmwf.int or join our mailing list to receive updates.

Info

As the OpenIFS project and model is still relatively new and under development, we ask interested users to send a short description of their intended use of the model.

Our aim is to work closely with new users to provide good support & training in return for feedback which we can use for reporting purposes. This may mean that from time to time we temporarily suspend new licenses in order not to overload our support capabilities.
