titleTIGGE - the THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble
TIGGE, the THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble, is a key component of

Image AddedThe TIGGE dataset consists of ensemble forecast data from thirteen global NWP centres, starting from October 2006. TIGGE was established as a key component of THORPEX: a World Weather Research Programme to accelerate the improvements in the accuracy of 1-day to 2 week high-impact weather forecasts for the benefit of humanity.

The TIGGE archive consists of ensemble forecast data from ten global NWP centres, starting from October 2006, which has been made available for scientific research. TIGGE has become a focal point for a range of research projects, including research on ensemble forecasting, predictability and the development of products to improve the prediction of severe weather. The TIGGE project is overseen by the GIFS-TIGGE working group, which includes representative of the TIGGE data providers and the TIGGE archive centres. Further information is available from this leaflet and on other pages of this website. We encourage researchers using TIGGE to inform the GIFS-TIGGE working group of their research progress, particularly when papers are published.

TIGGE data

The TIGGE data is available from the following portals:

For TIGGE users

If you use, or plan to use, TIGGE data, please sign up to the “tiggeusers” mailing list hosted by Unidata. This provides a forum in which TIGGE users can exchange information with one another, and provides a way in which TIGGE data providers can quickly pass news on to users.

News about the status of the TIGGE project can also be found here.

Contacts

If you have a general enquiry about TIGGE or GIFS, please contact one of the working group co-chairs. For enquiries specific to each ensemble prediction system, please contact the data provider directly, or via their representative on the working group. For enquiries about the TIGGE archive centres, please contact them via their data portal websites.

To request updates to this TIGGE website, please email tigge-web@lists.ecmwf.int.

GEOSS

As well as being part of the THORPEX programme, TIGGE is part of the “Global Earth Observation System of Systems” (GEOSS). TIGGE and the development of GIFS is task number WE-06-03 in the GEO (Group on Earth Observations) work plan.

Although the 10-year THORPEX program ended at the end of 2014, TIGGE has continued and the next five-year phase of the archive (2024–2028) is currently underway.

While TIGGE data is available free of charge, TIGGE users are strongly encouraged to publicise all of their research articles and applications that use any aspect of TIGGE data by emailing ECMWF's service  desk with a link to the article.
