As a spectral model, OpenIFS spatial resolution is expressed both by the spectral wavenumber truncation and the configuration of the physical grid on which the physical processes are represented. Spectral transforms are used to transform from one space to the other. IFS uses a hybrid vertical coordinate with a finite element vertical discretization.
