This short set of instructions will show you how to log into the Reading Academic Computing Cluster (RACC), the locations where you have space to store your workshop data and how to access the Metview software.

  1. Log into the lab PC with your class username and password which you received at registration.
  2. After a successful login, navigate to your N Drive filespace via the file explorer (yellow folder icon in the bottom task bar). The N Drive (N:) should appear as the last option when you click on “This PC” on the left-hand side in the file explorer window.
  3. Once you’ve accessed your N Drive, you’ll find a directory named ‘MobaXterm_Portable_v11.1’ and in there the ‘MobaXterm_Personal_11.1.exe’ executable. Double click on the executable to launch MobaXterm.
  4. In the MobaXterm window, click on ‘Start local terminal’ in the centre. This will launch a terminal window from which the RACC can be accessed via secure shell protocol.
  5. At the terminal prompt type: ssh -X cluster.act.rdg.ac.uk followed by the enter key.
  6. Enter your class account password if prompted.
  7. Once you are connected to the RACC, you’re in your home directory, which has a quota of 20GB. Use this to store your data from the practical sessions. If necessary, we have provided a second directory for any data overflow in /scratch1/ECMWF/<your username>
  8. Software on the RACC is accessed via the module command. Type module load metview to load the metview software into your environment and type metview to launch it.
