Specifies the type of horizontal level.

levtype=<value>

The levtype value has direct implications on valid levelist values. Common values are: model level (ml), pressure level (pl), surface (sfc), surface other levels (sol), e.g. snow levels, potential vorticity level (pv), potential temperature level (pt) and depth (dp).

Examples:

levtype=sfc            # surface

levtype=surface     # surface

levtype=sol           # other surface levels, e.g. multi-level snow fields

levtype=pl             # pressure levels (DEFAULT)

levtype=pv            # potential vorticity level

Note that ocean data in MARS is archived with levtype=dp, and wave data is archived with levtype=sfc.
