Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University, Sweden

10-12th June 2014

OpenIFS

OpenIFS is an ECMWF project that provides an easy-to-use academic version of the IFS forecast model. Use of OpenIFS for research and education is increasing across Europe.

This user meeting brings together OpenIFS/IFS users and interested parties from Universities, National Met Services and other organisations.

For information about last year's user meeting, please see: 1st OpenIFS user workshop (University of Helsinki)

Programme

This 3 day meeting consists of a day of presentations by OpenIFS/IFS users, with keynote presentations by Prof Erland Kallen (Director of Research) and Dr Peter Bechtold  from ECMWF.

The meeting will continue with two days of hands-on practicals and discussion session led by ECMWF staff on using OpenIFS and other ECMWF software tools. This year, the focus of the hands-on practicals will be convection. There will also be opportunities to discuss OpenIFS and Metview with ECMWF staff.

The programme for the meeting is available as a PDF .

On arrival, please go to the lecture room, C609, 6th floor Arrhenius Laboratory, Department of Meteorology where the meeting will take place on the first day.

Venue

Department of Meteorology, MISU Arrhenius Laboratory, 6th Floor Svante Arrhenius Väg 16C Frescati Campus.

Information on how to reach MISU is available.

Workshop dinner

The dinner has been arranged for Weds 11th at the Cafe Corniche (http://cafecorniche.se/).

If you have any special dietary needs (e.g. vegetarian), please let the meeting organiser know in advance: a.hannachi@misu.su.se.

Practicals

The theme of the practicals this year is convection and we will be looking at case studies of tornado formation in the USA and convection over Africa. To get the most benefit from these practicals we recommend some revision on convective theory. A good starting point is the ECMWF training course notes by Peter Bechtold on 'Atmospheric Moist Convection' found here: http://old.ecmwf.int/newsevents/training/lecture_notes/LN_PA.html.

The practicals will take place in the classrooms at the Dept. of Meteorology. There will not be enough computers for one each and we anticipate participants will work in pairs or groups. If anyone would like to work through the practicals with their laptop, wireless access at the Department can be provided. To run the practicals you will need the latest version of the VirtualBox or VMplayer software installed.
