The new IFS Cycle 47r3, expected to be the last upgrade before ECMWF's new data centre in Bologna will become operational, is scheduled to be implemented on 5 October 2021.

IFS Cycle 47r3 will bring a significantly improved physical basis for moist processes and is necessary to facilitate future development of the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). The upgrade will tackle longstanding systematic model errors in clouds, precipitation and radiation across all resolutions and forecast lead times, and provide an improvement across the board. Very importantly, it will make it possible in the future for the IFS to run across a broader range of horizontal resolutions, including convection-permitting resolutions.
