Transition plan

As part of our Data Centre move we have started the installation of ECPDS, the ECMWF Production Data Store, in Bologna. ECPDS, which is described in a Newsletter article, takes care of both the dissemination and acquisition of data. For the migration of the dissemination we are currently considering two options: 

  1. Incremental move of individual data streams
  2. Switch-over of all data streams together with the switch-over of the operational forecast

We will confirm at a later date which option will be used.

As a first step to prepare for an operational ECPDS in Bologna we are asking recipients of operational data to make changes to their network setup. We will also offer transfer tests to ensure that external hosts will be ready for the switch-over of the operational forecast production from Reading to Bologna, expected for mid-October 2022. Please note that until then the operational forecast will continue to originate from our Reading Data Centre. A separate page regarding the release candidate test phase of the forecast production will be published soon.


Indicative timeline 

The operational switch-over is currently expected for mid-October. The migration of dissemination users to the ECPDS in Bologna is scheduled to happen in October, close to, or on the day of the operational forecast switch-over. We will update this page with full details of the migration plan and dates shortly. All dates TBC.

Update!

We are progressing with the testing of dissemination from our Bologna Data Centre and completed our second round of tests with users on 3rd March. Please refer to our updates below.

Dissemination via the Internet or RMDCN

If you received test files on 3rd March: 

  • Please test the .md5 file using this command: md5sum -c ecmwf-tst.md5 and confirm that it is OK. 
  • Once you are happy, please delete the file so that we can test again if required. 
  • Please also contact us via our Support Portal to confirm the test was successful

If you did not receive these files on 3rd March: 

  • We will contact individual users to assist with troubleshooting. Please also refer to the instructions below and ensure that you have prepared the necessary changes to your firewalls.

  • Please update your firewall rules at your earliest convenience to accept connections from our new IP addresses used in Bologna. You may need to consult with your organisation’s network or firewall administrators. Please note that if no action is taken, you risk not receiving ECMWF real-time data when we migrate operations to Bologna, Italy.

    Please prepare these changes to your hosts, including any backup hosts, and ensure to keep the current firewall rules in place to allow connections from our Reading Data Centre subnets until its decommissioning in the third quarter of 2022.

    We will continue to try transferring the test files to your host, named "ecmwf-tst.bol" and "ecmwf-tst.md5". If you receive these files, please test the .md5 file using this command: md5sum -c ecmwf-tst.md5 and confirm that it is OK. 

    Once you have confirmed that the test was successful, please contact us via our Support Portal to let us know and delete the files so that we can repeat the test again if required.

Dissemination via ecaccess or LAN

Our installations are not yet complete in Bologna. We will update this page  shortly to inform users when these services are available for testing. Please 'watch' this page to be notified of updates.

Dissemination via data pull (you download the data yourself)

Please try connecting to the host diss.ecmwf.int with the same credentials that you use to access ECPDS in Reading:

You should find the files named: "ecmwf-tst.bol" and "ecmwf-tst.md5" on this host. Please try downloading these files and let us know if you have any issues, or confirm that your test was successful, by raising a ticket via our Support Portal. In the meantime, please ensure that you keep downloading your data from dissemination.ecmwf.int, which remains operational in Reading, UK. We will contact users closer to the migration date to inform you when your operational data will be migrated to Bologna, Italy at diss.ecmwf.int.
