OpenIFS is provided free for educational and research use under standard terms for an ECMWF software license. It is not open source nor public domain software.

OpenIFS is licensed per institution and requires an authorative signature from the host institution. This should not be seen as a barrier to use of OpenIFS, the support team at ECMWF will answer any licensing related queries. We only ask users to complete a short form registering their intent (see Releases to register your interest and request a license for OpenIFS).

Licensed users are granted write access to the user forums on this wiki site and can create their own 'space' under User spaces, which we encourage for sharing information with other OpenIFS user groups.

We also provide a contributors license for code written by users that we would like to include in OpenIFS or IFS.

Access to data

If your use of the model requires access to ECMWF data, other than that provided as part of OpenIFS or publicly available (e.g. ERA), contact openifs-support@ecmwf.int to discuss your data requirements. Access to data is normally provided through existing channels via national Met Services. Member State users may apply for an account on the ECMWF system through their National Met Service in the normal way. Please contact openifs-support@ecmwf.int in case of any queries.
