Chart dashboard is a place where you can organise your frequently used forecast charts

Chart dashboard concepts

The chart dashboard uses the same concepts as the ecCharts.

  • Products - the basic concept is a product. For example, a global chart showing 30 m wind and 2 m temperature with the outline of land areas and country boundaries would be a product.
  • Layers - a product is made from layers. For example, a layer could be the outline of land areas; a latitude/longitude grid or contours of meteorological variable such as precipitation.
  • Styles - a layer has styles and processing controls. For example, contour ranges and colours, and the accumulation period for precipitation.
  • Projections - you can visualise a map on a projection, which in our implementation is a combination of map projection and bounding box area. For example, Europe (the bounding box area) can be viewed using either a polar stereographic or cylindrical map projection. Note that products can have default projections.
  • Base time (BT) and validity time (VT) - exist for each gridded dataset, so also apply to each layer. Note that the time resolution of different layers can be different and can also change in time. For example the ENS timestep is longer after day 10 of the forecast. As a product is potentially a collection of layers, this means that the time availability of a given product is the intersection of all the time availabilities of all the layers that are part of the product. Simple!

How to access my Dashboard

The Dashboard link is available by clicking on your username in the main menu bar. It might look different depending on where you are on the website:

'My chart dashboard' from main ECMWF website'Dashboard' from open charts catalogue

How to create and rename tabs

The charts are arranged in tabs at the top. Tabs can be added, removed and renamed. Currently, each tab has a fixed 3 column layout. To rename a tab, simply click on its label and use the dialogue window.

How to add a product (chart or meteogram ) to my Dashboard

There are two ways to add a product to the Dashboard.

Add a product directly in the Dashboard

First select the tab where you want your product to be added to. Then, in the Dashboard interface, click on 'Add widget' and choose 'New chart widget' to add a map.

Click the 'Edit' icon (in the top right corner of the widget) to enter the Edit mode. Name your Widget and choose the product from provided list (or your custom list of products) and projection. You can also choose the height for your map.

Close the Edit mode.

Add a product from the Open charts catalogue

From any chart or meteogram in the open charts catalogue, once you have selected the chart, click on the Share button on the right hand side of the parameter menu and select "Add to dashboard". The chart will be imported into the chart dashboard tab that was last open. Once the chart widget is imported, it is possible to move it to a different tab.

How to get my Dashboard organised

Charts can be arranged as desired to facilitate easy viewing on the same page: just drag and drop it from the grey menu bar at the top of chart. You can then move it around.

How to move my chart to a different Tab?

The same concept from the previous section applies here. First, hover over the chart icon until the grey menu bar and move icon appear. Next, click on the top-left corner of the chart icon and drag it over the tab you want to move it to. When the popover message "Move over <tab name>" appears, drop the chart icon onto the tab.

How to remove or modify a Chart Widget?

In the dashboard, Charts are contained in "widgets" that can be added, removed and modified.  Hovering over the widget title will display a title bar that can be used to drag and drop the widget to a desired position on the page. Widgets can be moved to different tabs by dragging and dropping them over the tab name that you wish your chart to move to.

Clicking on will bring you back to the chart page. Where it goes will depend on where the product came from. If you added it from the ecCharts, it will take you there, if it came from Open charts catalogue, the product will open there.

Clicking on  will delete the widget.

How to access the chart preview

Larger previews of the product are available by clicking on product thumbnail. This preview page displays the product together with controls such as base time, step and area. Any change made on the preview window is saved back to the widget.
