On this space we collect material for evaluation of severe/extreme weather events. The focus is on the meteorological conditions and the forecast performance. The amount of material differs from case to case, and we are not claiming to give the full picture of the cases here. Users are welcome to contribute with material for the cases by using the comment function in the bottom of each page. To suggest a new case to evaluate, please contact us here (forecast_user@ecmwf.int). If you have any initial comments and material, please include them in the mail.

201406 - Rainfall - Bulgaria
An unstable air mass triggered a lot of convection accompanied by heavy thunderstorms, hail and torrential rain across Bulgaria from 15 to 19 June 2014. Climatologically June is one of the wettest months over most parts of the country. Nevertheless rainfall accumulations exceeded monthly means in some regions, especially in eastern Bulgaria. In NE of Bulgaria more than 100 mm fell just in 24 hours on 19 June causing a dozen of fatalities, most of them during a deluge in the residential area of Asparuhovo in the coastal city of Varna.

201406 - Convection - Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France
On 9 June severe convection affected western Europe. In Germany 6 people were killed, mainly by falling trees and wind gusts up  to 42 m/s was reported from Düsseldorf airport. The severe convection followed a period of extremely hot weather.

201405 - Rainfall + flood - South-eastern Europe
Between 13 and16 May 2014, severe rainfall hit south-eastern Europe. The worst affected countries were Serbia and Bosnia - Herzegovina where the rain is said to be the worst for 120 years. More than 80 people have died in land-slides and the flooding following the rain and hundred of thousands were forced to leave their homes. A lot of lifestock died during the flooding. Heavy rainfall and strong winds also affected Austria, Slovakia and other neighbouring countries.
